Anu Acharya, a pioneer in personal genomics

Prevention is more important than cure, keeping this as her prerogative Ms Anu Acharya, Founder and CEO of Mapmygenome and also the founder of Ocimum Biosolutions, has been a leader in the field of genomics and molecular diagnostics. Mapmygenome has been founded in 2012 with a vision to provide “Better Health for Indians using technology.”

Ms Anu, a graduate from IIT Kharagpur in 1995 and Master of Science in Physics and MIS (Management Information Systems) from the University of Illinois at Chicago has been a pioneer in personal genomics. She has shown what genetic variations means, how it may affect you and how DNA taken from saliva sample can help in presymptomatic testing and estimate the risk of developing a range of diseases from diabetes to adult-onset cancers and Alzheimer’s disease.

Few of the personal genomics tests includes Genomepatri-personal genetic profile featuring 100+ conditions and traits, Cardiomap-genetic test for heart disease, diabetes, and other associated lifestyle conditions, Oncomap- genetic test for cancer, Brainmap-genetic test for neuro, psychiatric and cognitive health, Gynaecmap- genetic test for women, etc. These tests assess not only genetic risks for diseases, traits, and conditions, but also responses to several drugs prescribed for treatment. Counseling services such as genetic counseling and nutrition counseling add value to the tests. In the diagnostics space, Mapmygenome offers Spoligo TB kit for detecting and typing TB. They also have PCR and sequencing molecular diagnostic tests for β-Thalassemia, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV.

With 15 years of her experience in the field of genomics, Ms Anu Acharya, Founder and CEO of Mapmygenome says: “India is a country where we have huge genetic diversity but there is very less data available, hence our research would be a good tool for research in future. Personal genomics, though a older medical technology in the Western countries but is a new medical technique in India.” Speaking about its uniqueness she said : “Since no two individuals are the same, Mapmygenome treats each individual as a unique individual and offers personalized healthcare solution that is predictive and preventive. Mapmygenome empowers individuals by providing them their health information and actionable steps through its individualized genetic counseling sessions even before any of the health traits or conditions are manifested. It focuses on prevention and works closely with hospitals, corporates, nutrition companies pathology laboratories and expert panel of doctors to develop personalized, preventive and predictive healthcare strategy. This trait was not found in the traditional medication system.”

Ms Anu was recently named “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum for its class of 2011. In 2008, she was named Biospectrum “Entrepreneur of the Year” and was conferred the Astia Life Science Innovators Award. She was selected by Red Herring Magazine to the list of “25 Tech Titans under 35″ in 2006.

Scaling greater heights in a short span of time, Mapmygenome already has few thousand users and has a target of providing preventive personalized healthcare diagnostics to 100+ million Indians and to save at least 1 million Indian lives by the year 2030.
