Hemodialysis-a major treatment procedure for kidney failure

There was a time when once detected with kidney failure there were no chances for survival. Gone are those days, with many modern technology and medical advancements coming up in the recent times, for those ailing with kidney failure there are now treatment available. One among the major treatment procedure for kidney failure is hemodialysis, a therapy that filters waste products such as creatinine, urea and free water from the blood when the kidneys have failed to function.

With the use of hemodialysis machine, the blood is removed from the body and filtered through a membrane called a dialyzer, which acts like a artificial kidney, which is used to filter the blood and later returns it back to the body. The newest dialysis machines that are now avaialable are highly computerized which has a continuous monitoring system having safety-critical parameters, including blood and dialysate flow rates, dialysis solution conductivity, temperature, and Ph, and analysis of the dialysate also checking the blood leakage or presence of air. Meanwhile, if there is any problem and the reading shows that it is out of normal range, it triggers an audible alarm and alerts the patients as well as the technician who is monitoring the patient.

The dialyzer is the key to hemodialysis. For those patients requiring hemodialysis there is a high concentration of waste and these dialysate pulls toxins from the blood. The dialysis solution is then flushed down the drain along with the waste. The electrolytes in the dialysis solution are also used to balance the electrolytes in the patient’s blood. The extra fluid is removed through a process called filtration.

For those suffering from end stage kidney failure, hemodialysis is an effective treatment. Apart from the hemodialysis therapy, a proper diet along with medication is utmost important for proper regulation of blood pressure and stimulating production of red blood cells inorder to prevent anemia.

Patients ailing with kidney failure can undergo hemodialysis as an outpatient or inpatient and it can be performed at home as well. MVJ Raj, Director, Bangalore Kidney Foundation said: “Prior to dialysis there were no treatment procedure available for kidney failure. For those suffering from end stage kidney failure, apart from kidney transplant, dialysis is one of the way out. With hemodialysis though the kidney cannot be repaired but if conducted for a standard thrice a week, patients can lead a near to normal life.”
