Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy a boon for kidney donors
Getting a kidney donor is one of the best ways to give a new lease of life for the ailing renal failure patient. In the process, maintaining caution during the time of kidney retrieval from the donor is equally important to transplanting the said organ to the receiver. With technological advancement in medical science there are various new ways that have come in for the procedure. Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy is one of the best ways known for surgical removal of kidney and also a boon for kidney donors as it entails quick recovery.
The Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy technology is minimal invasive where is just tiny incisions are used and the kidney is removed using a scope or camera and special miniaturised surgical instruments. The kidney is then removed through an incision in the lower abdomen. The removed kidney will have to be immediately placed in the recipient. This minimally invasive procedure has a shorter recovery period and the complication rate is very low. In addition, the quality and function of the transplanted kidneys are excellent.
Generally the nephrectomy (surgery to remove a kidney) is a major procedure on the donor. Traditionally, a live donor nephrectomy required a healthy individual, the donor also had to undergo a major operation where the kidney was removed through a large incision. This procedure called for lot of pain needing more days for recuperation and hospital stay for the donor. The donor further had to stay away from their normal activities for a longer period of time.
Meanwhile, it can also be noted that receiving a kidney from live donor is much more advantageous than compared to a cadaver kidney retrieved from a deceased person. Major among the advantages includes – decreased waiting time, lower incidence of delayed graft function, improved patient and graft survival and increased cost effectiveness.
Speaking to Techspirit, MVJ Raj, Director, Bangalore Kidney Foundation said: “Technology has improved a lot. Since the kidney retrieval and transplant has to be done immediately within specified period of time, these kind of new technology like the Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy has improved the treatment process. This improvement in technology has also given better quality of life not just to the kidney recipients but also to the donor.”
